Mirror Project Entries

Friday, January 27th, 2006

Ok, I’ll start us off on this week’s theme, which is entries for The Mirror Project. The idea is to get some sort of self portrait using a reflective surface. Plenty of examples can be found on The Mirror Project’s website, and there are a bunch of other rules that they have as far as pictures that are posted.

The picture above is smaller than what I usually post, because I couldn’t find the original, and had to download the version that I had posted to The Mirror Project all those years ago. This weekend, I hope to do some shooting and come up with some more creative shots.

Anyway, the above picture shows a reflection of me and my camera on the elbow of the cold air intake in the engine compartment of my car. (And no, I couldn’t figure out a way to cram more prepositions into that sentence.)

As usual, if you have ideas for future themes we can use, please let me know.

Things With Meaning

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

As previously discussed, this week’s theme is Things With Meaning. Please post a picture of something that has meaning to you, and the story behind it (i.e. why it has meaning to you).

We’ve been having some great threads lately, so let’s keep it up. As usual, if you have any suggestions for future themes we can use, please let me know.

Two Tone

Monday, January 9th, 2006

Here’s my first entry for this week’s theme.

I had a lot of problems with my first attempt at shooting for this theme. So, I just shot a new group, of which this was a part of.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with. As usual, feel free to tell me your ideas for future themes to use.

New Year’s Eve

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

Alright, I’ll start off the first weekly theme for the new year.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get any really good pictures from any of the parties that we went to. We started out at a friend’s house where they had a huge spread. They had 6 fondue pots set up (2 oil, 2 cheeses, and 2 chocolate) , and all kinds of crazy stuff to dip. We also went through a ludicrous amount of wine during the course of dinner.

That particular group is great, because they’re always doing crazy crap (or maybe that should be “random crap”). For instance, one of them found an old Polaroid camera in their parents’ attic while they were home for the holidays, bought some film, and took a whole bunch of pictures that evening (see above picture). On the packaging for the film, there were instructions stating that while the pictures were developing, they should be kept somewhere warm… and of course, it didn’t take long for that to start going badly. ;)

Afterward, we hit some other parties. So, what did you guys do for New Year’s Eve this year?

Pet Peeves

Thursday, December 8th, 2005

Alright, I think that it’s time for the new theme to start. As discussed earlier, the theme for this week will be Pet Peeves. Everyone has been so creative in the past that I am looking forward to see everyone’s entries for this one. There are bound to be some really good ones for this week, and I anticipate some entries driving other people to post more.

As always, please send any suggestions for themes to me. And feel free to post multiple pictures for any of the themes.

What’s on your desktop?

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

This week’s theme was suggested by Winifred. The theme is “What is on your [primary computer’s] desktop?”.

There are two obvious interpretations of the theme. You could post the picture you are using as the background of your desktop (although it would probably be best not to post a .bmp, for storage considerations).

The other thing you could post is a screenshot of your desktop (in Windowz, hit Ctrl+PrtScrn to take a screenshot and copy it to the clipboard). Posting a screenshot would probably be more interesting to everyone else. I know that at least one person here is running some wacked-out desktop skin. And at least four of us have multiple monitor setups on their primary machines. So, it might be interesting to see how everyone’s desktops are configured, and what backgrounds people are using.

As usual, if you have any ideas for future themes, please let me know. Winifred also suggested doing a Snow theme. We may use that in the future (even though half of the participants live in areas where it doesn’t snow). Up here in the armpit of the US, we’re going to get socked with snow over the next few days, so you might want to get out and shoot.

Smears

Monday, November 21st, 2005

Ok, it’s a little early to start the next theme, but I wanted to get it started while I had time (this week has been unexpectedly busy).

This week’s theme is Smears (photos taken with long shutter times), and it was suggested by Alex. I took this picture at an autocross this past summer. Autocross is a form of autoracing in which people drive on closed courses that are defined by pylons, against the clock (not wheel-to-wheel). It’s extremely safe, and relatively low-cost.

As usual, if you have suggestions for future themes we can use, please let me know.

P.S. Why have I been unexpectedly busy? I have to go to New Employee Orientation. At Case. Nevermind that I’ve been at this school longer than the people training us. Tomorrow I get to learn about workplace safety… =|

Fall

Monday, November 14th, 2005

So, I didn’t end up having any time to shoot this weekend. Instead, I spent the whole time sanding a desk and eating redonkulous quantities of food. Here’s one that I like that I shot from before:

Everyone had such creative ideas when we had the Vertical Lines theme, so I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone shot for this week.

If you have any ideas for future categories, please let me know. I’ll make sure they are used. For instance, this theme was suggested by Alex.

Favorite Vacation Photo

Friday, November 4th, 2005

Uh, ok, since no one else has posted a photo, I’ll start the thread for this week’s theme.

This one is probably my favorite picture from any vacation I have taken. It was on my first trip to Austria (November 2003), and I was still green and wide-eyed about everything there. Down in Salzburg, the weather was overcast — as usual for a day in November. A friend of Lisa’s offered to drive us up the Gaisberg (mountain) on a little day trip. We took her up on the offer, and we were glad we did, because we got a lot of spectacular photos. The top of the Gaisberg is obviously very high — high above the clouds as you can see from the picture. The thing that I miss the most about visiting Austria is all of the hiking on mountains that we did there.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else’s pictures and the stories behind them.

Also, I wanted to remind everyone that after this week, the next theme is going to be Fall. So, you have an extra week to figure out what you are going to shoot. As usual, feel free to post more than one picture for any theme.

If you have any ideas for future categories, please let me know. I’ll make sure they are used. This one I believe was suggested by Andy. And the theme we are using next week was suggested by Alex.

Vertical Lines

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Ok, after speaking privately with Barry, and in the absence of other suggestions, we have decided that the theme for the next week will be Vertical Lines.

I have to admit that I have NO IDEA what I am going to submit for this one. But I’m sure that we’re going to see some interesting submissions.

Feel free to be as creative as you want. Remember that if you want to submit more than one photo for any of the themes, go right ahead. It will be fun to see what everyone comes up with.
